Update Schedule

There was once an update schedule. It lived a good life, a peaceful life. A quiet life. But then... things began to change. It became more and more erratic, sometimes completely disobeying its very reason for existance. And at last, the update schedule could take no more. It cast off its chains and went free, seeking new lands where it would be appreciated. This message it left where once it had lived, to warn other schedules of the peril.

Review: All Fall Down

All Fall Down All Fall Down by Ally Carter
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I spent the first three-quarters complaining about how it wasn't as good as Gallagher Girls, and the last quarter remembering that in fact I had exactly the same problems with the last few Gallagher Girls books.
It wasn't bad, and there was a lot I liked about it (Grace is very well-written at times), although the twist was rather obvious. I do wish it hadn't been the beginning of a series, though. I think without that it would have been quite a good book, but I can't see this series going anywhere good.
Ah, well. I guess I'll reread Gallagher Girls.

Review: Ptolemy's Gate

Ptolemy's Gate Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Reread November 2016:
I was really happy to find that this book was so much better than I'd thought it would be on reread... until the last fifty pages or so. I'd say Stroud got bored, but that wasn't really the impression I got. I'm not sure what happened, but the writing didn't match up to the rest of the series and was extremely disappointing. I still love this series, but hopefully next time I pick it up I'll remember to skip the ending.

Review: The Midnight Star

The Midnight Star The Midnight Star by Marie Lu
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

It's been a while since I've read anything really YA, and I'd forgotten a lot of things that bother me about the genre. I'm trying not to take stars for that. Overall, though, this book just didn't do it for me. I really like the idea- main character who goes insane and seizes power is undeniably awesome- but the book never focuses where I wanted it to. I wanted to see Adelina's conquests, not silly magical quests. I think this series would have been much better if the author had given up on her main plot, honestly.

The Amulet of Samarkand The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud

There were more worldbuilding holes than I noticed the first time around, but still an excellent book. I knew where all the jokes were and I still laughed out loud.

Review: The Ring of Solomon

The Ring of Solomon The Ring of Solomon by Jonathan Stroud
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Unfortunately very meh on rereading. I've moved on to the original trilogy and am relieved to find that's still excellent. It's weird; you'd think the prequel would have better world-building and a more sensible magic system than the original. I'm honestly wondering if Stroud wrote it. It feels like a shallow reflection of the original trilogy.

Travesties Travesties by Tom Stoppard
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

Read for school, didn't understand a word, thankfully don't have to write an essay.
Okay, so I understood enough to get what Stoppard is getting at. And I can see that for a history nerd, a good performance of this play would be hilarious. But it's not my thing at all.

Review: The Way of Kings

The Way of Kings The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There is hope for you yet, epic fantasy.
I read this and its sequel and couldn't put either of them down. I was very disappointed to learn that the third book doesn't exist yet and probably won't for a while.

This is me, so I must complain that the last scene really belonged in the second book instead (the scene before it had me completely satisfied about the ending... adding another scene was disorienting rather than shocking).

This deserved a much longer, more detailed review. Perhaps later.

Reread October 2016:
I own Way of Kings as an ebook, which combined happily this year with a new commute and Kindle. This book lasted me more than a month of commuting both ways every day, which I'm going to interpret as a tribute to its length rather than my reading speed.
I'm sad to say that it wasn't nearly as good the second time. It makes me nervous to reread Mistborn, which was next on my commute list. It wasn't bad, exactly, just not awe-inspiring like it was the first time. It also made me realize that most of my favorite scenes are in fact from Words of Radiance, which makes me sad since I don't own that one on Kindle and my library doesn't offer it.
Honestly, this time around it was fairly forgettable. Oh well. Still excited for the third book.

Review: The Creeping Shadow

The Creeping Shadow The Creeping Shadow by Jonathan Stroud
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

They're still good, but I really wish Stroud would focus on the ghostbusting instead of creating grand overarching plot. He really writes an excellent creepy ghost scene... overarching plot, meh. I think this book would have been much improved by using Guppy as the main villain.

A Man Called Ove A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Charming, hilarious, and so very tragic.
A little longer than I thought was really ideal, and there were some oddities (the cat acts very strangely, and some things were taken more lightly than I would have liked), but overall excellent.

Review: Tigana

Tigana Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2.5
This book digs itself into a hole and keeps going instead of trying to climb out.
I won't even speak of the abomination that is the epilogue.
This could have been a good book about a flawed man on a stupid mission that might have good consequences. It was instead a passable attempt at serious fantasy.
I can't really recommend it. The prologue was lovely, though. Read that.

Review: The School for Good and Evil

The School for Good and Evil The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

How... very odd. It just makes no sense. The storytelling is strange. The characters are awful. The author seems completely oblivious to the fact that everything he writes points to Sophie and Agatha being in love (or at least Agatha in love with Sophie). Tedros isn't worth my time to insult. The setting is insanely simplistic and the storyline directly contradicts every attempt at teaching a moral (sure, beauty isn't the same as goodness... so why does doing something good make you literally turn prettier?)
And where are the non-first-year students??? How can so few teachers manage so many kids? Why do alumni want to send their kids back to such a horrible place?
This started out so fun and promising. It's a shame.
A warning to parents: This isn't really middle-grade. It's extremely violent, there is some language, and in general I wouldn't want my kids reading it (among other things, it's a pretty bad book).

Review: The Golem and the Jinni

The Golem and the Jinni The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It's not so much that I enjoyed it (although I did), it's that it's a good book. One of those where you just sit back and savor the fact that it was well-researched and planned and written. I read it fairl slowly, and enjoyed every minute of it. There were, of course, faults- the writing wasn't so well suited to a few of the more active scenes, I can't say I ever really liked or understood either main character, the pacing was just a bit odd, the ending didn't feel like it necessarily resolved much (and it also didn't feel like it quite fit in with the pacing and themes of the rest of the book)- but in general it was simply a good book.
I can't speak for the Syrian bits, but the Judaism had clearly been carefully researched and checked. I found it mildly annoying that we can't really gauge frumness or that we never go more in depth with the religious aspects, but obviously that would be interesting only to a tiny percentage of readers, so I can't really label it as a problem with the book. The only mistake- and correct me if I misunderstood something- was that at some point the aleph is referred to as the beginning of all creation. Wouldn't that be a bet? Or is it referring to something I don't recognize?
All in all, a good book. I recommend it highly.

Review: The Thousand Names

The Thousand Names The Thousand Names by Django Wexler
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I don't know. In the end, I honestly can't say I liked it very much.
I think part of it was the pacing. Everything happened so fast and yet so very slowly. It never dragged, exactly, but it felt off.
The characters were a bit odd too. I really wanted to love Janus, but I just couldn't. He wasn't consistent enough to be awesome.
I honestly wish it had been historical fiction. The magic felt like an effort to draw the plot out. And I'm thoroughly sick of guns in fantasy novels (Mistborn and Brian McClellan used up my tolerance, so it's not really this book's fault).
The wars went too smoothly. Sure, people die... but no one we really care about. And the more absurdly complex the plan, the more it works perfectly. Winter, for example, is for some reason constantly getting trapped and having to think up a brilliant escape plan. I couldn't help thinking her leadership skills would have been better directed at not getting her entire company trapped in the first place. And if she's just a random soldier, are all the other officers doing the same thing? Because if this is random chance, entire companies should be getting wiped out ever few days.
The lack of real female characters was unfortunate. Understandable, except that the attempt was made and then not carried through (one character who's revealed to be female then proceeds to pretty much turn from a brave soldier into a damsel in distress for the rest of the book).
It had so much potential. It was so clearly a good book. I was eager to read it and finished it fairly quickly. I'll probably regret it, but I'm going to read the next one.

Review: Drowning Instinct

Drowning Instinct Drowning Instinct by Ilsa J. Bick
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It has its problems, but it gets the elusive four stars for the following reasons:
I really, really enjoyed it.
The ending drove me crazy but was actually sort of brilliant. I'm still thinking, trying to find clues and untangle what happened.
It was honestly really well done. I can't blame Jenna because I couldn't help but fall in love with Mr. Anderson too.
I finished it desperately wanting a sequel even though I know there could never be a good one.

My main problems were:
Occasional passages made no sense, but considering how it's being told I can forgive that (and some odd tenses).
Her parents never really made any sense to me. The father more so than the mother- I honestly just don't get it. I wish we knew more about them and whether Jenna's skewing what's really going on.
Danielle was frustrating. I wouldn't be surprised if the author wanted to leave room for a book for her.

Overall, very well done. I don't know if I can recommend it, but I liked it more than I've liked a book in a long time.

Review: Grave Mercy

Grave Mercy Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Dull and predictable. The ending was also weird- did they solve all their problems off-screen?
For an assassination book, there's not much assassinating and a good deal too much kissing. This would also have been a much stronger book had the author not shied away from the seduction aspect.
The villain is incredibly obvious. The plot in general bored me.
Ismae is honestly disturbing. She's just fine killing people until it affects her own emotions. It's hypocritical and does not make me believe that she truly is devoted to her god, as she of course later decides that doing whatever she wants is the best way to serve him. Her faith was really the part I respected about her most- at times she really did seem willing to serve her god regardless of the emotional rifts it might create, but in the end she chooses her own selfish desires.
In general, disappointing.

Review: The Autumn Republic

The Autumn Republic The Autumn Republic by Brian McClellan
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I enjoyed it, which I didn't the second, and I found myself caring what happened again. That's why two stars, because I can't really pretend it was more than okay. McClellan's world feels lazy to me- differences between it and our own are too hard to find for a fantasy novel. Plants, animals (with the exception of a cave lion, but it's never been clear to me if those actually exist), people, technology, seasons- it's all the same. His plot is too neat and tidy, and yet there are still too many loose ends for my taste. He's created an excellent final thesis for Brandon Sanderson's class, but as a published fantasy series there's something lacking.

Review: Sorcerer to the Crown

Sorcerer to the Crown Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book was undoubtedly beautiful. For the most part I greatly enjoyed reading it. I had two main problems: the pacing, and Priscilla.
This book moves in jumps and starts. I like both action and politics, but the book has a major switch every fifty pages or so, which was just odd. I felt the fairy scenes especially could have used a little more time, while all the politicking could have been a little more backseat (especially all the "whoever could the villain be?" DUH!) There were also just no surprises in the book. I was confused every time the author presented something obvious as though it were a major twist.
Priscilla... where do I start. The truth is, although I'm still horrified, she's kind of awesome. Power-hungry and ruthless, but not in the way most heroines are. She's not tortured or anything; she's just willing to do what needs to be done to advance her own position. The author doesn't seem to see anything wrong with this, which made for an interesting and disturbing read. But the end was too much for me. Still shuddering. (Speaking of which, things get quite dark by the end. It's not as much fluff as I'd been hoping).
Ah, well, the writing was lovely. And I may have swooned just a little at one scene, even if the romance was a bit of a disaster by the end (also, something feels a little off to me about the only black characters in the book being the ones in love...)
Oh, yeah, and the morals of this book are questionable in general. The author raises most of them, but by the end nothing has been done to resolve it. I'm still not sure if I think this is a good thing or not, but it was interesting.

I'll give it three because it was fairly good fluff. I got kind of bored halfway through- and I always procrastinate by cooking, so thank you Mrs. Landers for 15 muffins and 16 rolls- but I ended up finishing it in two days. I can't really point to what I disliked- just an overall feeling of mehness.
It is similar to Firefly, except far less entertaining and you keep wondering if it's just a hack.

Review: The Traitor Baru Cormorant

The Traitor Baru Cormorant The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a plot-driven book. That can be a good thing, but the characters were just interesting enough that I wanted to know more, and the plot just wasn't quite there. I feel like this would have been better as a longer book with more of a look at the characters. I wanted more on Tain Hu and Muire Lo in particular.
The author made some missteps, which were mostly a problem because he wanted his plot to be so brilliant. Some things just didn't add up, and in general I was unconvinced of Baru's genius. She just seems of average intelligence at best. Intuitive, maybe, but bad at handling the information she receives.
I was not particularly shocked by the ending, and honestly it dragged on waaay too long. The epilogue was pretty terrible, and the letters were a bad mistake.
I did like the plot. It was a good idea, especially the world-building. I just wish that it had been more in the background, because I felt the book had so much more to offer than just meetings and tactical plans. This author seems not to have heard of "show don't tell".
The writing was generally good. Bit clumsy occasionally, and the POV got odd toward the end, but acceptable. The style isn't my favorite, but I can deal with it.
I liked this book. I enjoyed reading it for the most part, and at the beginning I had such hope for it. But it just wasn't quite there.
